What is what to do when getting old tenants mail?

When you receive mail for a previous tenant, here's what to do:

  • Write "Not at This Address" or "Moved, No Forwarding Address" on the envelope. Clearly mark the envelope to indicate that the recipient no longer resides at your address.

  • Return the Mail to the Sender. Place the marked envelope back in your mailbox or drop it off at a post office. The postal service will then attempt to return the mail to the original sender.

  • Avoid Opening the Mail. It is illegal to open someone else's mail, even if it's addressed to a former tenant.

  • If the Mail Continues, Contact the Post Office. If you repeatedly receive mail for the previous tenant despite returning it, contact your local post office branch. They can help resolve the issue and prevent future misdeliveries. Give them as much information as possible, such as the tenant's name and how long ago they moved.

  • Notify the Sender Directly (Optional). If the mail appears to be important or time-sensitive (e.g., a bill or a legal notice), you can optionally contact the sender directly to inform them that the person no longer lives at your address. This is especially helpful if you know where the tenant moved.
